Dominica’s Bee Keepers Conference https://www.avirtualdominica.com/dominicas-bee-keepers-conference/ https://www.avirtualdominica.com/dominicas-bee-keepers-conference/#comments Thu, 26 Jul 2018 01:52:43 +0000 http://www.avirtualdominica.com/?p=16891

Dominica’s Bee Keepers Stakeholders Conference took place at the Prevo Cinemall in Roseau, Dominica on 24th July 2018.

The turnout was tremendous: the room was filled with professional Bee Keepers, hobbyists and honey-lovers who came to hear the state of the Bee Keeping industry in Dominica. A diverse group of Presenters (see below) painted a very positive picture.

Some highlights of the lively discussions and presentations:

  • There is tremendous demand for honey in the local market.
  • Honey extracted in Dominica is of high quality.
  • There are many ready-made markets, just waiting for our honey to be ready for export (Europe, French West Indies, Cuba).
  • Financing is available from the AID Bank for small businesses at a very low interest rate — and special loans are available for Women and Youth (18-35) who are starting a business. From the AID Bank’s perspective, Bee Keeping is a viable industry – so get involved and start up a Bee Keeping business!

Areas to focus on in the Bee Keeping industry moving forward:

  • Making the Bee Keepers Cooperative Society strong – all Bee Keepers are encouraged to join.
  • Dominica’s honey needs to be properly branded and marketed.
  • The Bureau of Standards can help educate Bee Keepers about proper labeling and other procedures for making honey export-ready.
  • We need to look at the use of pesticides and its effect on our bees.
  • Keep our bees safe – the Ministry of Agriculture prohibits importing bees.
  • Begin a Queen-Rearing drive to increase the number of hives in Dominica.

Presenters
Presentations included the following: the Bee Keepers Cooperative (Past President Lennox Fagan), Ministry of Ecclesiastical Affairs, Family and Gender Affairs: Registrar of Cooperatives Division (Ms Mariet Canoville), Ministry of Agriculture, Food & Fisheries (Permanent Secretary Dr. Reginald Thomas), Ministry of Commerce, Enterprise & Small Business Development (Permanent Secretary Mrs. Esther Thomas), Division of Trade (Mr Walter), NDFD (Mr Joseph), AID Bank (Ms Josephine Titre), and Invest Dominica (Mr Monelle).

Warm days allow for picnicking on wild Atlantic beaches or snorkeling among bubbling springs. Perhaps an excursion to hidden waterfalls or taking in the crystal night sky.

When it rains, you can soak in steamy sulfur pools, or snuggle with your partner as raindrops pat against the roof.

Amid Bird Watching, Canyoning, Scuba diving, Hiking, Kayaking, Whale Watching, Sightseeing… or simply taking in a sunset on a quiet beach, there’s a little bit of everything for the romantic adventurer in you.

So if you are preparing a 12-13-14 wedding or just a special get-away,  December in Dominica will not disappoint.

Papillote Wilderness Retreat is a one-of-a-kind experience in Dominica; the exquisite location on the outskirts of Morne Macaque’s rainforest combined with the natural spas tucked away in their lush tropical gardens will send your heart soaring.

This is the perfect destination to come to should you be have any aches and pains. Whether you’ve just hiked the beautiful Trafalgar Falls which neighbours Papillote, or you’ve come on vacation to escape the daily hustle and bustle of life, it’s time to concentrate on number one.

At Papillote you can indulge in a personal health and wellness programme, customised to your needs. Try the local juice (whichever is in season, they’re all great) combined with a dasheen puff for a quick snack. After a massage or meandering through the gardens, sip your cocoa tea on the verandah overlooking the verdant Roseau Valley. Take a calming private yoga class surrounded by the picturesque rainforest or just sit… and listen to the birds chirping and the sound of rain dripping from the foliage. Soak in a natural hot pool, then jump into the cold pool for a quick refresh, all while gazing upon your own private waterfall in a secluded, natural hideaway.

A day spent in the natural setting at Papillote is a complete health and wellness experience all its own!

Believe it or not, cinnamon has been found to have some amazing household uses. Further to my post last week, “The Healing Power of Cinnamon” which discussed the health benefits of Cinnamon, a study  shows the power of Cinnamon Oil in combating dangerous pests like mosquitoes, fleas, and ticks. In fact, cinnamon oil was found to be more effective than DEET in killing mosquito larvae.

The study was conducted by Peter Shang-Tzen Chang, a professor in the School of Forestry and Resource Conservation at National Taiwan University.  Details about the study can be found here.

To summarise the findings,  the scientists explained that an “LC50 value” is defined as the concentration that kills 50% of mosquito larvae in 24 hours. So the lower the  LCD value, the higher the concentration and thus the more effective it is.

  • Cinnamon has an LC50 value of 29 ppm
  • DEET has an LC50 value of 50 ppm

Thus, cinnamon’s lower value makes it a more effective killer of mosquito larvae.

An article was published in July, 2004 in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry which made a formal recommendation to use cinnamon oil to repel insects.

While this study focused on mosquito larvae, researchers are hopeful that cinnamon oil can act as a repellent to adult mosquitoes and they plan to test their theory in the near future.

Cinnamon, known as ‘canelle’ here in Dominica, is actually the bark of the cinnamon tree. Cinnamon is an amazing spice and has been used for centuries for healing many types of ailments.

Cinnamon’s healing power comes mainly from two properties: it is an anti-bacterial and an antioxidant.

Medicinal Uses of Cinnamon include treating these conditions:

  • High Cholesterol
As little as half a teaspoon a day has been proven to reduce LDL cholesterol. A half-teaspoon of cinnamon has only 3 calories.
  • Diabetes (Type II)
Cinnamon actually lowers blood-sugar levels. Based on a recent study,  cinnamon was found to  contain polyphenols, or antioxidants, that boost proteins which are important in activating insulin, transporting glucose and responding to inflammation (Web MD). Richard Anderson, PhD, was among the first modern researchers to link the antioxidants in cinnamon to increased anti-inflammatory response and blood sugar reductions in diabetes patients.
  • Leukemia & Lymphoma
Another study suggested cinnamon can reduce the proliferation of leukemia and lymphoma cancer cells.

Further, one study even indicated that simply smelling cinnamon gave a boost to memory and overall cognitive function. It is also great for women as a source of iron, calcium, fibre and manganese, and it has been shown to provide relief from arthritis pain.

In addition to all these health benefits, Cinnamon is used as a  Natural Food Preservative. Its anti-bacterial properties make it perfect for preserving meat. Perhaps this was the origin of the delicious middle eastern dish known as Lamb Tajine (lamb sauted in cinnamon, among other spices).

How to Get More Cinnamon in Your Diet

It’s easy!

Drink Cinnamon Tea

  • Buy it pre-packaged in tea bags; get a natural Cinnamon Tea like Blow’s Tea here in Dominica
  • Make your own cinnamon tea by grating a stick of cinnamon into a cup of boiling water.

Chew Cinnamon Toothpicks

  • These are easy to make. Buy some toothpicks and soak them in a jar of cinnamon oil overnight (cinnamon oil can be found with other essential oils). Then chew them after meals to freshen breath and get the added health benefits.

Sprinkle it!

  • On your cereal, in your yoghurt, over your oatmeal… wherever else you can.
  • Into your existing recipes. Or experiment with new recipes like Lamb Tajine – you will be surprised at the delicious flavour cinnamon adds to meats, provisions and vegetables!

Check in with us next week to learn how cinnamon can be used around the home.
