National Emblems Week: Dominica’s National Anthem https://www.avirtualdominica.com/national-emblems-week-dominicas-national-anthem/ https://www.avirtualdominica.com/national-emblems-week-dominicas-national-anthem/#respond Tue, 18 Oct 2016 17:52:28 +0000 http://www.avirtualdominica.com/?p=13357

The National Anthem of Dominica

  • Music composed by L.M. Christian
  • Lyrics written by W. O. M. Pond

Dominica’s National Anthem was first written in 1965 as a National Song. It became the National Anthem in 1967 when Dominica achieved Associated Statehood status (1967 to 1978).

Our national anthem has a lovely melody and moving lyrics. When it is played, we stand to attention with hands (in closed fists) at our sides.

It is such a delightful national anthem that it was named one of the top ten anthems among 205 countries competing at the 2008 Beijing Olympics!

The National Anthem of Dominica has three stanzas. Here are the lyrics:

The National Anthem of Dominica

Isle of beauty, isle of splendour,
Isle to all so sweet and fair,
All must surely gaze in wonder
At thy gifts so rich and rare.
Rivers, valleys, hills and mountains,
All these gifts we do extol.
Healthy land, so like all fountains,
Giving cheer that warms the soul.

Dominica, God hath blest thee
With a clime benign and bright,
Pastures green and flowers of beauty
Filling all with pure delight,
And a people strong and healthy,
Full of godly, rev’rent fear.
May we ever seek to praise Thee
For these gifts so rich and rare.

Come ye forward, sons and daughters
Of this gem beyond compare.
Strive for honor, sons and daughters,
Do the right, be firm, be fair.
Toil with hearts and hands and voices.
We must prosper!
Sound the call, In which ev’ry one rejoices,
“All for Each and Each for All.

From birth to its evolving sound, Jazz is a stew of diversity – the musical language of a melting pot, much as Creole is to Dominica. It is therefore so fitting that every year a celebration of Jazz and Creole takes place in our small Caribbean Island.

As the month of June rolls in, warm salty evenings prickle with the pulsing drum and bass, with trumpets, clarinets and flutes in a build up the main stage event held on Sunday.

On the day, in the restored fortress at Cabrits National Park, the view is spectacular. Vast skies crash into the raw forested mountains, and the calm cobalt blue bay is dotted with yachts and sailboats.

The stage is set among the ruins of the old Fort and the crowd feasts and sashés to the energetic songs of each musical artist.

It is an intimate setting shared with incredible performances by Angelique Kidjo, Marlow Rosado y La Riqueña, Heston Francis, the 8th Note Jazz Band, Breve, and the Jacques Schwarz-Bart Voodoo Trio. At this celebration, it is a meeting place, where everyone becomes immersed in the musical, cultural and historical smoothie that is Jazz and Creole.

I’ve never woken up and gotten ready for a carnival procession to start at 4 am; low and behold I was up and awake at 3.30 am putting my leopard print make up on, ready to join in the fun of J’ouvert!Kimmie and Dice

When we reached Roseau, we followed the sound of the steel pan band and sure enough there were crowds of people in each road dancing and partying. It was a brilliant atmosphere for day-break, gently easing you into the vibes for what was to come a little later.

Being my first time attending Carnival in Dominica I had to get involved, so  I joined the WCK t-shirt band with some friends. We got to meet so many people in the parade, all of you there enjoying the amazing atmosphere for the day.

What a feeling as everyone in the ‘band’ moves back and forth to the music, then the chorus kicks in and ‘Jump Up’ really begins! You go into Carnival with a white t-shirt, but come home covered in everyone else’s glitter and paint – in my book that’s the sign of a fun carnival. I was pleased with myself as I made it home in good time too, as I needed to get some rest for round 2 on Tuesday.

Carnival Tuesday is the day where the beautiful costumes get shown off in all their glitz and glam. The craftsmanship that goes into these outfits is just amazing.

Real Mas

Town was alive again, pulsating with the sounds of Dominica; laughter, music, cheering and singing.

Nous Konnet Viv is the title of the Mas Domnik 2014 theme song, for those of you who aren’t sure what this means, it translates to We Know How To Live – I couldn’t agree more!

I recently spoke to a friend on Skype and we were talking about how there are no carnivals in Sussex. We have many beer and ale festivals, bathtub races and fun fairs on the seafront in the summer, but nothing huge where everyone gets involved. Also a “British Festival” usually consists of muddy fields, wellington boots and, in my case, losing the location my tent on multiple occasions.

Since my arrival in Dominica in October I’ve had a pretty busy calendar of events, it’s been awesome!

The first event I attended was Creole in The Park. Luckily I’d managed to be-friend a Dutch guy and we’d agreed to meet up for the 3 days of the festival; it wasn’t hard for us to spot each other, I’m short and covered in tattoos whilst he has blonde hair and blue eyes.

We danced, drank, danced some more, and we were even taught some moves by new friends! It was a brilliant introduction to my escape to Paradise.

CITPNext up was World Creole Music Festival, 3 incredible nights of being fully immersed in the Caribbean vibes and rhythms. By this time I had heard a few of the songs on the radio or in town, and some of the artists had been at Creole in The Park too. The beats kicked in, the crowd erupted and everyone was dancing.

Roseau’s festivities didn’t stop after this. The next day there was a sea of colour going through town for the National Costume Parade, a steel pan march leading the way, then the most beautiful Creole outfits, traditionally known as Madras. Here’s a photo, as my description won’t even come close:

Madras

This was all during Dominica’s Independence celebrations, which coincided nicely with my first month here. What a great introduction to Dominica! But everyone was telling me “wait till Carnival, this is nothing!”

This month, the Opening Parade for Carnival in Roseau was, as promised, fantastic. The town was alive, everyone was out to party and that they did.

I’ll be sure to let you know how my first time “playing mas” goes – I can’t wait for Carnival!

HaitiFour young Dominicans from a group called R.E.A.L. Exclusive Records have written, recorded and produced a song dedicated to helping Haiti.

The four members – Jevon Davis (President), Aamir Aaron Augustine (Vice President), Anderson Angol and Curwin Breedy (singers)  – got together one Saturday and within a weekend had completed their song, ‘Haiti.’

By the following Monday, the song was at the radio stations and being played throughout the country.  The group then sought funding from Youth Development Division and were able to produce 300 CDs.

50% of profits go to the Clean Water Campaign for Haiti.

The Clean Water Campaign is organized by Lifeline Ministries (headed by Tina Alexander).  It is a EC$20,000.00 project where portable water filters are being purchased at 30% of cost. Geest is shipping them from England to Santo Domingo, DR for FREE and the organization has to arrange to get the filters to Haiti.  The plan is to have a portable filter at every church so that there will be clean drinking water available.
