Roseau, Dominica – June 9, 2022

Discover Dominica Authority (DDA) is pleased to support the watersports sector by partnering with Soufriere Outdoor Centre (SOC) on the inaugural Waitukubuli Sea Trail expedition. The objective of the expedition is to design a permanent sea kayaking trail and tour from the north to south of Dominica utilizing high end sea touring kayaks.

From June 7 – 10, 2022, Wes Moses, owner of SOC, and Melanie Grant, an award-winning filmmaker from Barbados, will kayak the length of Dominica. The duo will begin the mission at the Guadeloupe Channel off Capuchin and will paddle south over four days to the Martinique Channel off Scott’s Head. The Waitukubuli Sea Trail will be the only sea kayaking trail in the Caribbean. During this and future expeditions, kayakers can expect to observe various marine life such as turtles, dolphins, schools of colorful fish or even a gliding shark’s fin. The sea trail provides much opportunity to explore hidden beaches, rock outcroppings, inlets, and the cliff sides.

All around the world, races are designed to prove the participants’ endurance, will and stamina. And while this is not untrue of Dominica’s Nature Island Challenge, our race stands out as something different, much like the island itself.

When people talk about Dominica, you often hear the same grouping of words – green, lush, mountains, rivers, valleys.  A treasure trove for the curious adventurer, Dominica is the type of destination which leaves an impression on those who grace her shores, and stays with them long after they leave.

NIC3_fbNIC 3.0 is a four day race across the 754 km² island, in which participants must not only be physically capable to deal with the sometimes unforgiving terrain, but also cunning and inventive to solve the cultural challenges that await them.

The brain child of the Discover Dominica Authority (DDA), this televised event showcases the island’s dramatic landscape and vibrant culture.

Now in it’s third year, NIC 3.0 is continuing to grow and evolve. This year from April 13th – 17th 2015 there will be 6 teams competing: Trinidad (1), Barbados (1), USA (2) and Germany (2).

Public participation is encouraged so stay up to date on the race and activities: on FacebookTwitterInstagram and YouTube, and visit the website at  www.natureislandchallenge.com

There is something truly magical about Dominica, it’s not one of those countries where you can’t stay for 2 weeks and feel like you’ve really experienced all that it has to offer.

Having come from a hectic life back in England (always busy, fretting about all kinds of things), arriving in Dominica has forced me to adapt my lifestyle. I’ve learnt to take things at a slower pace; there’s no reason to rush to the shop, why sweat extra when you can walk slowly and still buy the things you need.

You can’t walk from one end of town to the other without someone stopping you to say hello, asking where you are from and seeing if you are enjoying your stay in their beautiful country. It’s amazing to meet people who are so proud of where they live and who want to show it off at every opportunity!

When I first arrived in Dominica so many people said that I’d fall in love with the island, they were certain that I would be staying and not want to leave; I have to say, they were right!

Something about this place has gotten under my skin, and it’s left me craving more.

Sunset at Mero Beach

I know there are so many more adventures to be had on The Nature Island of The Caribbean; so many things that I haven’t managed to do this time. Believe me they’ve been added to list for next time.

Those are just the things off the top of my head, I know there is so much more to experience.

I recently learnt of the phrase “I going, to come back”, it took me a few moments to figure it out; you’re going and you’re coming back.

So you might be in a bar and you need to go home to get something but you will be back.

In my case, I’m going back to England for a while and I will be coming back to Dominica!

Warm days allow for picnicking on wild Atlantic beaches or snorkeling among bubbling springs. Perhaps an excursion to hidden waterfalls or taking in the crystal night sky.

When it rains, you can soak in steamy sulfur pools, or snuggle with your partner as raindrops pat against the roof.

Amid Bird Watching, Canyoning, Scuba diving, Hiking, Kayaking, Whale Watching, Sightseeing… or simply taking in a sunset on a quiet beach, there’s a little bit of everything for the romantic adventurer in you.

So if you are preparing a 12-13-14 wedding or just a special get-away,  December in Dominica will not disappoint.

From birth to its evolving sound, Jazz is a stew of diversity – the musical language of a melting pot, much as Creole is to Dominica. It is therefore so fitting that every year a celebration of Jazz and Creole takes place in our small Caribbean Island.

As the month of June rolls in, warm salty evenings prickle with the pulsing drum and bass, with trumpets, clarinets and flutes in a build up the main stage event held on Sunday.

On the day, in the restored fortress at Cabrits National Park, the view is spectacular. Vast skies crash into the raw forested mountains, and the calm cobalt blue bay is dotted with yachts and sailboats.

The stage is set among the ruins of the old Fort and the crowd feasts and sashés to the energetic songs of each musical artist.

It is an intimate setting shared with incredible performances by Angelique Kidjo, Marlow Rosado y La Riqueña, Heston Francis, the 8th Note Jazz Band, Breve, and the Jacques Schwarz-Bart Voodoo Trio. At this celebration, it is a meeting place, where everyone becomes immersed in the musical, cultural and historical smoothie that is Jazz and Creole.
