Roseau, Dominica – June 9, 2022

Discover Dominica Authority (DDA) is pleased to support the watersports sector by partnering with Soufriere Outdoor Centre (SOC) on the inaugural Waitukubuli Sea Trail expedition. The objective of the expedition is to design a permanent sea kayaking trail and tour from the north to south of Dominica utilizing high end sea touring kayaks.

From June 7 – 10, 2022, Wes Moses, owner of SOC, and Melanie Grant, an award-winning filmmaker from Barbados, will kayak the length of Dominica. The duo will begin the mission at the Guadeloupe Channel off Capuchin and will paddle south over four days to the Martinique Channel off Scott’s Head. The Waitukubuli Sea Trail will be the only sea kayaking trail in the Caribbean. During this and future expeditions, kayakers can expect to observe various marine life such as turtles, dolphins, schools of colorful fish or even a gliding shark’s fin. The sea trail provides much opportunity to explore hidden beaches, rock outcroppings, inlets, and the cliff sides.

In a few months, December 13 2014 or 12-13-14 will be the last pure number-sequential date of the 21st century. If you plan to celebrate something special, where better than in Dominica where our unspoiled landscape offers something different.

Warm days allow for picnicking on wild Atlantic beaches or snorkeling among bubbling springs. Perhaps an excursion to hidden waterfalls or taking in the crystal night sky.

When it rains, you can soak in steamy sulfur pools, or snuggle with your partner as raindrops pat against the roof.

Amid Bird Watching, Canyoning, Scuba diving, Hiking, Kayaking, Whale Watching, Sightseeing… or simply taking in a sunset on a quiet beach, there’s a little bit of everything for the romantic adventurer in you.

So if you are preparing a 12-13-14 wedding or just a special get-away, December in Dominica will not disappoint.

A Canadian whale biologist from Dalhousie University and his colleagues have made some amazing discoveries about these mysterious mammals that spend most of their lives underwater. He and his research team have spent several years following some Sperm Whale families to observe their methods of socialization and communication.

It appears that certain traits resemble those of humans more than one might think!

Here is the third installment in our series on community tourism in Dominica…

Part 3: Giraudel & Eggleston

The twin villages of Giraudel and Eggleston are located high above Dominica’s south-east coast, along the slopes of Morne Anglais. The villages are renown for their agriculture-based industries of flower growing & arranging as well as growing fruits and vegetables. In recent years, Giraudel has also become quite popular for its Cooking Tour which uses locally grown ingredients to teach visitors how to cook creole food.

Flowers

In addition to Flower Garden Tours and Cooking Tours, these communities have several engaging hikes. For the avid hiker, make your way up to the summit of Morne Anglais (3,434 ft) where you will find stunning views down to both the Atlantic and Caribbean coasts. Or take an easier trek and follow the trail from Giraudel to the neighbouring village of Bellevue Chopin, a route which is part of the forthcoming Waitukubuli National Trail Project.

For more information about these tours and the communities, visit their website:

The post DHTA’s Hike Fest ~ The Final Hike: Capuchin to Cabrits first appeared on a virtual Dominica.]]> The third and final hike of Hike Fest 2010 took place on Saturday. The hike was along the 14th segment of the Waitukubuli National Trail, which begins at Dominica’s northern tip, Capuchin, and goes south to the Cabrits National Park.

Dr. Honychurch at Canna Heritage Park

The day started off brilliantly at Canna Heritage Park, with a delightful breakfast snack provided by the Capuchin Cultural Group: warm Cocoa Tea made with fresh coconut milk and arrowroot. The trek was led by Dr. Lennox Honychurch who provided informative and entertaining information as we passed by many historical spots.

The turn-out was tremendous – 63 hikers in all!

From Canna Heritage Park, we descended a steep path that has been in use for hundreds of years; by the Kalinago, by the Capuchin Monks who settled the area, by the British, and by modern day school children who made their way to Sunday morning church in Portsmouth along this route.

River along the path Down to the Sea

Following a small stream, the path descended to the rocky coastline.

Here we walked across boulders and beach.

Trekking along the coast

Several waterfalls splashed onto the beach as we passed, created by rainwater running down the ravines from Morne Aux Diables above us.

Coastal Cascades

As we trekked along the rugged coastline, we reached one technically difficult part of the route. Here, as the tide was up, we had to crawl along the edge of the rock to reach the other side. Teamwork was essential here and with the help of many, we all made it through!

Squeezing through...

The trail joined the main road, so we had a brief walk along a smoother surface from Toucari, up to Morne A-Louis…

View at Morne A-Louis

Then it was back along the rocky coastline to reach the break between the two hills of the Cabrits and up into the forest again. We passed by the Battery and the ruins of the Commandants Headquarters.

Commandant's Headquarters at the Cabrits

From the Cabrits, we followed the road to Purple Turtle Beach where we relaxed, bathed in the sea and reflected on what a wonderful hike we had just finished!

So Hike Fest 2010 came to a close. But keep your eye on DHTA’s website and don’t be surprised if there are more of these organised hikes throughout the year!

“Norwin A/S with the support of Sustainable Planning and Development successfully installed a Class 1 NORWIN 225 kW wind turbine on a 40 meter mono pole tower in Dominica.

The wind turbine is installed at Rosalie Nature Resort Facility where it will offset the high cost of energy from the utility and supply energy to the grid when excess is generated. The wind turbine is expected to generate 586,000kWh of clean energy per year offsetting 160 metric tons of CO2 emissions per year.”

Whales in Dominica, Photo by Steve McCabeOur Prime Minister today announced that Dominica will not be voting with the Japanese at the upcoming International Whaling Commission annual vote on the resumption of commercial whaling.

Dominica will abstain at the vote, and this is a great step in supporting our eco-tourism image in general and a huge boost to the whale-watching industry here!

Indeed, the PM’s statement is worth repeating, since it’s a firm commitment to eco-tourism in general:

“In common with most of our Caribbean neighbors, Dominica remains strongly in favor of the sustainable use of marine resources,” said Roosevelt Skerrit, Prime Minister of Dominica. “Our stringent environmental practices and philosophies have earned us the label, ‘The Nature Island’ and, upon careful review and deliberation of the issue, it has been determined that voting for an overturn of the existing worldwide ban on commercial whaling would be inconsistent with the standards and principles of sustainability that we so fervently advocate.”
