The post Art, Jazz & Courtney Pine first appeared on a virtual Dominica.]]> Art, music and tradition are showcased throughout the year in Dominica, but during the months of May and June, it’s a time for everyone to immerse themselves in this scene!  You can find an array of events involving theatrical and dance performances, concerts, art workshops, gallery shows, poetry readings and more.

DOMFESTA, an annual event running from May 3rd to May 31st 2017, has just begun. It’s festivities will run right up to another annual event – Jazz ‘n Creole.

A wonderful way to acknowledge the sweet sounds of this genre of music, Jazz Fringe Events kick off the festival by spreading the experience in several locations around Dominica. This year we have the renowned Courtney Pine as the Headliner for Jazz ‘n Creole Main Stage event on June 4th. Active since the 1980’s, he established his name as a jazz saxophonist, however he is a multi-instrumentalist.

The post Jazzing Creole ~ A Wrap-Up of Dominica’s Jazz ‘n Creole 2014 first appeared on a virtual Dominica.]]> From birth to its evolving sound, Jazz is a stew of diversity – the musical language of a melting pot, much as Creole is to Dominica. It is therefore so fitting that every year a celebration of Jazz and Creole takes place in our small Caribbean Island.

As the month of June rolls in, warm salty evenings prickle with the pulsing drum and bass, with trumpets, clarinets and flutes in a build up the main stage event held on Sunday.

On the day, in the restored fortress at Cabrits National Park, the view is spectacular. Vast skies crash into the raw forested mountains, and the calm cobalt blue bay is dotted with yachts and sailboats.

The stage is set among the ruins of the old Fort and the crowd feasts and sashés to the energetic songs of each musical artist.

It is an intimate setting shared with incredible performances by Angelique Kidjo, Marlow Rosado y La Riqueña, Heston Francis, the 8th Note Jazz Band, Breve, and the Jacques Schwarz-Bart Voodoo Trio. At this celebration, it is a meeting place, where everyone becomes immersed in the musical, cultural and historical smoothie that is Jazz and Creole.
