The post Dominica’s Nature Island Challenge ~ NIC 3.0 Adventure Endurance Race first appeared on a virtual Dominica.]]> All around the world, races are designed to prove the participants’ endurance, will and stamina. And while this is not untrue of Dominica’s Nature Island Challenge, our race stands out as something different, much like the island itself.

When people talk about Dominica,you often hear the same grouping of words – green, lush, mountains, rivers, valleys.  A treasure trove for the curious adventurer, Dominica is the type of destination which leaves an impression on those who grace her shores, and stays with them long after they leave.

NIC3_fbNIC 3.0 is a four day race across the 754 km² island, in which participants must not only be physically capable to deal with the sometimes unforgiving terrain, but also cunning and inventive to solve the cultural challenges that await them.

The brain child of the Discover Dominica Authority (DDA), this televised event showcases the island’s dramatic landscape and vibrant culture.

Now in it’s third year, NIC 3.0 is continuing to grow and evolve. This year from April 13th – 17th 2015 there will be 6 teams competing: Trinidad (1), Barbados (1), USA (2) and Germany (2).

Travel to Dominica just got a little easier…

Dominicans and visitors alike can welcome the new airline Hummingbird Air!

This 15 passenger airplane will fly into Canefield Airport (DCF) which is only a few minutes drive from the capital Roseau. Flights are scheduled every Thursday and Sunday between Dominica and the US Virgin Islands – St Croix (STX) and St Thomas (STT).

  • 2751 departs STX at 7:30 am, arrives DCF at 8:50 am
  • 2752 departs DCF at 10 am, arrives STT at 11:30 am
  • 2753 departs STT at 12:30 pm arrives DCF at 2:10 pm
  • 2754 departs DCF at 3 pm, arrives STX at 4:15 pm

With a fleet of three Beech 99 commuter airplanes, Hummingbird Air plans to include new flights and destinations starting in October.

The post History Lesson/Homeward Bound (A Six-Month Adventure to Dominica, Post 6) first appeared on a virtual Dominica.]]> I’ve always been told stories by my Grandmother about having grown up on the island, being given great descriptions of the house that she grew up in with her siblings, and then how my father and uncles used to play there as children. So, a drive up to Vieille Case was put on the calendar! A journey from South to North.

We were over halfway into the drive when the topic of Captain Jack Sparrow came up; reason being is that part of the Pirates of The Caribbean 2 film was here, right where we were driving through.

Out came the camera and my phone, texting pictures to my sisters back in England, “Guess what film was filmed right here?” I think they may have been a little bit envious of my current location!Pirates

The journey continued further North;  the sea views were out of this world, the coves, and the sea breaking as it comes into the coast was breath-taking.

Finally we arrived at our destination. The house is on an incline so has a lovely view overlooking the ocean. It’s one of those beautiful old houses with wooden beams throughout, stiff wooden window shutters, and quirky details around the building.

When people say that a building has character I don’t think I’d fully understood it till now. Knowing that a huge part of my family grew up in this house, seeing the room where they ran their shop, or the garden where my Dad and uncles played as children, was quite overwhelming and infused every part of the old structure with deeper meaning.

Should the day come when I have my own family, and the house is still standing, I’d want to take my children there too. It’s important to know where your family is from and I am so blessed that Dominica is a part of me.

A new ferry service began coming to Dominica this month. On October 13th, SAS JEANS Fast Ferry Service (a subsidiary of SAS L’Express des Iles) made its first trip to the Cabrits Cruise Ship Berth in Portsmouth, Dominica.

The Ferry, HSC Liberty,  travels from Pointe-a-Pitre Guadeloupe to Portsmouth, Dominica on Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays.new Ferry Service for Dominica

The ferry runs from Portsmouth, Dominica to Pointe-a-Pitre Guadeloupe on Tuesdays, Fridays and Sundays.

This will make it much easier for weekend trips to and from our neighbouring French island.

The schedule is as follows:

  • Depart Guadeloupe: 13:15 hrs on Mondays, Thursdays, Saturdays
  • Depart Dominica:  10:15 hrs on Tuesdays, Fridays & 14:15 hrs on Sundays

As of October 24th 2011, the fare for Guadeloupe to Dominica is EC $260 Return.

This historic moment was marked by the arrival of LIAT Flight 461 from Antigua, which carried on board the President of Dominica Mr. Nicholas Liverpool,  Government Cabinet Members,  industry officials and stakeholders, and members of the media.

The event was marked by speeches and performances and concluded with a display of fireworks. Tarina Simon’s rendition of the National Anthem was particularly moving.

The advent of night landing at Melvillle Hall Airport is another positive step in Dominica’s development. It will help provide greater flight opportunities for those travelling to and from Dominica.

Winair also landed their inaugural flight on this night, arriving from St. Martin. Other airlines are expected to take advantage of Dominica’s new night landing capabilities in the near future.
